Daytona Beach, Florida
Daytona Beach has been a vacation hotspot since the late 1800's. Matthias Day built the first hotel, Palmetto House in 1874. The golf courses were frequented by John D. Rockefeller. Since that illustrious time, Daytona Beach has grown as not many other vacation spots could.
Hard-packed, wind swept beaches still draw crowds today. Daytona Beach offers one of the few American beaches where you can drive nearly up to the surf. Automobile racing became a favorite pastime here specifically because of these hard-packed beaches. Ormond Beach became known as the "birth place of speed". You can take in a live race, or visit many of the motor sport venues located in and around the area including the world famous Daytona International Speedway.
